Top Fishing Spots in Cavan: A Local’s Guide for Anglers

Top Fishing Spots in Cavan: A Local’s Guide for Anglers

If you're an angler in Ireland, chances are you've heard whispers about the magic of County Cavan. Tucked into the heart of the Lakelands, this place is a dream for coarse, pike, and trout fishing. As someone who’s cast a line into these waters more times than I can count, I’m thrilled to share a few of my favourite Cavan fishing spots — straight from the banks and boats I fish myself. - Mick

🎣 Lough Sheelin – For the Wild Trout Chasers

Let’s start with a big one. Lough Sheelin is world-renowned for its wild brown trout. It’s over 4,500 acres of fly-fishing heaven. You’ll get the best sport during the mayfly season (mid-May to early June), but big sedges in the evening can produce monsters well into August. This lake needs a permit, but it's worth every cast.

Access: Piers and jetties at Inny Bridge, Finea, Kilnahard, and more.

Tip: Hire a guide for the best chance at a real specimen – they know the hatches like clockwork.

🐟 Lough Oughter – A Pike Angler’s Paradise

This vast, maze-like lake system near Killeshandra is a top pick for pike. It’s full of bays, islands, and deep holes — prime pike territory. Some waters here also hold quality bream, roach, and hybrids.

Access: Best from boat; launches available at Killykeen Forest Park.

Top Spot: Try the Eonish stretch – it’s a 60-peg match venue known for consistent catches.

🎣 The River Annalee – Hidden Gems for Trout and Coarse

Winding through the Cavan countryside, the Annalee River is a versatile waterway. Around Butlersbridge, Deredis, and Derryheen, you’ll find great coarse fishing — bream, roach, hybrids, and pike all show up. And above Ballyhaise, it transforms into prime trout water managed by local clubs.

Permit required for trout fishing.

Hot Tip: The deeper pools like Montgomery’s Ford are a magnet for big bream.

🐠 Arvagh & Lough Gowna – Festival-Class Coarse Waters

On the Longford border, Lough Gowna and nearby Arvagh host major angling festivals for good reason. These waters are well-stocked and full of action. Dernaferst, Rockfield, and Hollybank are all superb pegs — whether you’re after match weights or just a relaxing day’s fishing.

Access: Car parks, stands, and swims are well developed.

Bonus: Arvagh’s King of Clubs match is worth catching in September.

🚣 Other Notables

Cuillaghan Lake (Ballyconnell): Great pike and well-maintained stands.

Castle Lake (Bailieborough): Ideal for bream, hybrids, perch, and pike with easy access.

Ervey Lake (Kingscourt): Stands and slipway make this a favourite for serious pike hunters.

Local Advice Worth Knowing
